Can you know the stock's record day prior to the ex-dividend day?

Joe is correct. But be aware that at the open on the ex-dividend date, the stock price drops by the amount of the dividend. Therefore, buying a stock just to get one dividend doesn't usually do you much good. Dividends pay off over time, due to tax advantages, and because dividend stocks are usually stronger than non-dividend stocks.
