What is the difference between mechanical and hydraulic lifers?

Contrary to a couple of the answers, all lifters, mechanical & hydraulic have rocker arms & push rods (not connecting rods) to move the rocker arms & lifters up & down. Connecting rods are coupled to the pistons & crankshaft. Mechanical lifters need to be adjusted occasionally, hydraulic lifters do not need to be adjusted.
