How did my Home VCR tape get a copyright?

I have a home movie on a VCR tape and now I am trying to covert it to DVD, since VCR's are old. I am getting an error message that says this tape is copyprotected and cannot be copied. How did this happen when I recorded it from my video camera? Is there a way around this?
