Why is the sun's corona ordinarily not visible? How do we know it exists?

the Sun's corona is composed of such a rarefied plasma, the light emitted from the outer surface of the Sun itself overwhelms any visible radiation from the corona, we can detect the corona through the use of x-ray detectors, as the corona is much hotter than the surface temperature of the Sun, we can also see the corona visibly during a solar eclipse
