Changing Gears in Automatic.?

A friend's '98 Honda Civic Coupe is in a very awkward situation. Since It is an automatic, I umed that you need to step on the brake to change gears. Recently as I was driving his car, My friends knee hit the Gear stick, while I was accelerating, and it knocked up into Neutral. My friend was not even pressing the on on the side which moves the gear up and down. Now the Civic shifts from D4 to D3 to d2 as well as into neutral. Is this a serious problem?
